Things to do inTavistock

Visitor information for Tavistock in Devon

The charming market town of Tavistock nestles to the west of Dartmoor National Park and is rightly known as the 'doorway to the moor'. Straddling the River Tavy midway between Plymouth and Okehampton it is the perfect base for exploring the beautiful local countryside.

The town has a rich history: it was first granted its Market Charter in 1105 and to this day the market is still a great attraction for visitors and locals alike, offering a fascinating range of shops and stalls.

Sir Francis Drake was born here in 1540, one of 12 children of a Puritan farm worker.

For those with an appreciation of architecture Tavistock is a delight, its buildings being constructed of local green Hurdwick stone, contrasting serenely with the grey granite pavements.

The surrounding countryside is perfect for those with a love of outdoor pursuits. Golf, fishing, canoeing, swimming, trekking, horse riding, rambling, shooting and much more are available for all to enjoy.
