Axminster is situated just five miles inland from the coastal resorts of Seaton and Lyme Regis and also benefits from being in beautiful surroundings.

At the centre of this Saxon town is the splendid church of St Mary the Virgin, the oldest building in Axminster.

The famous Axminster carpet industry was started in 1755 by Thomas Whitty, whose factory produced the highest quality, custom made carpets for the country's stately homes and mansion houses.

A visit to Axminster Museum, housed in the old police station and courthouse, gives an insight into the town's history with fascinating displays ranging from agricultural tools and archaeology to old photographs.

Axminster has a variety of events going on throughout the year including the Annual Axe Vale Festival of Gardening and Crafts, featuring floral exhibitions, arts and crafts, antiques fair, live music and much more. Another popular event is the Axminster Community Festival, with concerts and events held throughout the town.
Yet another great event not to be missed is the Axminster Carnival, when large colourful floats pass by the hundreds of people soaking up the fun atmosphere.

Just to the south west of Axminster is Shute Barton Manor, owned by the National Trust. The house, with its battlemented turrets, is one of the most important non-fortified manor house in the country. It has been occupied by the Carew Pole family since the 16th century. The manor claims to have the largest fireplace in England!
